We’ve survived!….I think Pt. 2

Filed under: Not Good, Summer, Weather — Nathan @ 10:33 pm

This is part two of the flood in early September where we received over 12″ of rain in 24 hours..

Water filling our window-wells later that morning made me work fast. First, I bailed out the wells once. Next, I went to our basement to see if there was any water. Yes, need to get some towels and get this taken care of. When I was done It was still pouring rain. In fact, it had poured all night and on till 2:00 in the afternoon! I walked outside and through the rain to the window well. Wow! Already filled back up and it had been only ten minutes! I quickly bailed it all out and looked at the gutters. Water was pouring out of the edge of the gutter in the front and backyards. I grabbed our 8′ step ladder to get the job done. Up the ladder in the front and back, I found a leaf blockage. After grabbing the leaves and throwing them down the ladder, both the front and back was draining normally. By the time I was finished, the window well needed bailed again. So, I bailed it out once again. After that my mom said that she was going to the store and get necessary food items before the storm got worse. After mom left, Susanna, Lydia, and I, decided to take an adventurous ride down to our local ditch. (A half-mile trip.) :) While we were driving, Lydia’s power steering locked-up in the middle of the road. After shutting off the engine and and then starting it, we went straight home. The window-well was full again, and it wasn’t even noon! It was one of the only times I didn’t worry about eating lunch! I wasn’t even hungry! After bailing once again, I called Dad who was at work and told him I didn’t think I could do this much longer. He told me that he would come home and show me what to do. By that time, all the rain had stopped and there was hardly any water going into the window-well. He helped me build up sand bags around the patio which was where we decided all the water was coming in. Finally! No water went in the window well after that. Now it was time to relax. I was exhausted. Oh well, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! That’s all that mattered.
